Penelope Cruz was raised in Madrid to a merchant Eduardo and a hairdresser Encarna. As a teenager she was a compulsive performer and acted in various TV commercials for her family's amusement. But after that she moved her attention on dance and joined commercial ballet school.

She lived with a pop music group of Spanish musician called Mecano. Penelope Cruz was appeared in the bands video clip la Fuerza del Destino. She also becomes popular after the song Penelope which was composed by Joan Manuel Serrat.

In 1998 her luck changed when she won the award as the Best Actress Goya for the comedy film Nina de tus Ojos, La. She also tried for English movies. Her first international big hit was Almodovar's Todosobre mi madre (1999) (in English "All About My Mother"). In it she played an unchaste. Because of her awards and accolades she found herself in demand on both sides of the Atlantic.
